സമയം ആറു പത്ത്. ആഫീസടച്ചു വീട്ടിലേയ്ക്കു മടങ്ങാനുദ്ദേശിക്കെ ടെലിഫോൺ ശബ്ദിച്ചു.
റിസീവർ കൈയ്യിലെടുത്തു.
‘ഹല്ലോ! നെൽസൺ സംസാരിക്കുന്നു.’
നിശബ്ദത. ഒരു വിമാനം ഇരമ്പിപ്പറന്നകലുന്ന ശബ്ദം ഫോണിൽക്കൂടി കേട്ടു. ഒപ്പം വിമാനത്താവളത്തിലെ മറ്റു ശബ്ദകോലാഹലങ്ങളും. പെട്ടെന്ന് ആ ശബ്ദമെല്ലാം നിലച്ചു. ടെലിഫോൺ ബൂത്തിന്റെ കതകടച്ചപ്പോഴാണ് ശബ്ദം നിലച്ചതായി എനിക്കു തോന്നിയത്.
‘മി. നെൽസൺ ?’
അതൊരു പുരുഷസ്വരമായിരുന്നു.
